I spent the morning at Bob’s looking at his engine he just painted. He also gave me a spacer for the flex plate which I showed the boys at the office. I am glad I did because what I have is an external balance plate that goes on the flexplate to balance the external balanced 383 or 400 block. I can imagine what a vibration I would have had with this little jewel. I am not an engine man but I really enjoy learning about them. Bob has a 383 that was fresh, sat for 10 years outside and now needs a rebuild and de-rusting. Ron told him to throw it away and start over but I somehow think it can be saved with lots of soaking in the stripper’s tank.
I started to cut the wishbones for Andre and remembered that I am using a Magnum dropped axle with 38 1/2 inch perch centers and the P&J plate is designed for a Super Bell 36 1/2 inch perch center axle. The instructions call for a cut 36 3/4 inches but I know from experience this is too short. I looked at my file from previous builds and find that I cut them at 38 3/16 to allow for the wider stance of the axle perch centers. I will call Jerry at P&J and see if he knows what the distance should be. I don’t want to ruin a perfect set of wishbones.
The weather promises to be good this week so I should accomplish a lot if I don’t get hung up at the office…
P&J makes a nice split wishbone kit for a 1940 Ford. I like the 3/4 adjusters with the 1/2 inch bolts. You can always count on quality parts from P&J and Jerry is the best. He answers the phone most of the time.
I have the parts ready to cut and weld but need to make sure the distance is correct. Maybe tomorrow I can find out from Jerry or Bob-O.
Bob’s rear door is perfect and is correct for a 1940 SD. This old car is very solid and he is driving it all over the state. Note Long Beach Swap Meet items from Sunday.
Sedan deliveries came with bucket seats so Bob installed a pair from a late model Ford that work just fine. They fold forward so you can access the rear compartment. He will reshape when he has the car upholstered. For now they work and are comfortable.
This beauty is looking to be adopted very soon. Her owner requires more room for the grandkids and would like for someone to take care of her with the respect she deserves. She is a non smoker, drinker and comes home early every night. If interested give me a call or send me a note. The price is $42K or near offer.
Unmolested interior is stock looking and in very nice condition. The dash is the correct colors and everything works as Henry designed it to do.
The flathead is a smooth running one with 3:54 rear gears for highway cruising. The engine has traveled very few miles over the last several years but has always been maintained as required. No, Chevy’s for this little forty coupe.
I did replace some blind nuts in Ruby. Tom told me to use star washers to prevent screws from backing out. Great idea and you can’t see them.
Mr. Forty sent in some photos of one of the cars he is working on. Bob has the 50 gallon drum of CMG in his back yard so that is the color of the Woody. Nice choice!
I had to show this picture of the hood fitment. If you have ever worked on a 40 Ford you know how hard it is too achieve this look. Bob has probably built over 50 forty Fords so he has this part down to a science.
Steve is working on his Deuce and liked the look of Bubba’s headers on his roadster. Note the nice flow, the firewall kick out at the bottom and the classy “Vanilla Shake” paint. Roy knows Deuces.
While cruising Chuy’s last saturday night I ran across this gasser looking Vette. When 283 is not enough why not go to the extreme of a 502 to make the straight axle 57 really haul the bacon. This car had a crowd around it all night and rightly so. Nice job!
Gary has a lot of cars but when comfort is important and room is required there is nothing quite like a Nomad for the day.

This sure looks like the correct sedan delivery bumper. Even I am confused anymore on these silly rear bumpers.
