Friday’s Feature

When possible, I try to feature a special car or some subject that I have been thinking about lately.  I usually start off at the “Office” to make sure I am included in the weekend activities.  The only thing going on for our group is the Long Beach Swap meet on Sunday.  I have not been in a long time as I have not found anything I really needed the past few times I have attended.  It is more of a social event for me than searching for parts.  I have all the parts I need and then some.  I do enjoy seeing old friends and once in a while something for an old Ford will follow me home.  I am out of space and the wife wants me to downsize.  I don’t think she knows about my storage unit, but that story is for another day.

The wind has been blowing for several days and the temperatures are in the high 70’s which is perfect for sailing not working on the cars or the house.  Are we ever satisfied in California?  I am headed to Frantic’s this afternoon to see his latest projects and visit IMS for some more metal.  As you can tell, I like to build things and constantly need supplies.

A long time friend Rich, is building a couple of hiboy roadsters at the same time and sent along some photos.  Rich is going for a traditional look with a good handling and riding suspension.  He is having the Roadster Shop install the new bodies using Kugel front and rear suspensions.  I think he is tired of the choppy ride you get with an axle car.  The suspension choice can be debated by all gray beards, but when it comes to going down the road there is no argument, only bragging rights.  I have resisted the IFS for many years but must admit, if ride is your main consideration in a Hot Rod, then by all means install the IFS and IRS in your ride.  I think we all have to agree that traditional for some folks is a straight axle and buggy spring rear and for others it is a fully independent suspension front and rear.  I still prefer the axle for looks but I only go to the “Office” and back and not across country.  I have driven from here to the Bay Area in both styles and in the case of the axle car, I need to stop every couple of hours and stretch.  The 46 with the MII front suspension rode far superior and was like riding in the wife’s Escalade.  It’s your car and your money so do what you want like, not what other people like.

Have a great weekend driving your Hot Rod on the highway, after all , that is why you built the car.  They become “Garage Queens” after 30 days of static movement.

The Roadster Shop has lots of working space and several cars under construction at the same time.  Rich is moving right along with Hiboy #1.  He added the front frame horns to make the car more traditional in appearance.  I think he accomplished his mission.  All new metal must be a pleasure to work with.  He is not using these wheels and has selected the Real Wheels for his ride.

The RS did a nice job of blending in the Kugel front suspension utilizing the front frame horns.  The holes are the current trend.

The rear is not quite finished but will have the stock gas tank in the back.  Note the IRS.

A full frontal shot reveals the overall look of the roadster.  He is shooting for June for completion.  Good luck rich.

Rich is also having a 33 Speed hiboy roadster built for him by the RS.  I love these cars and this should be a beauty when completed.  The RS had a more traditional styled car in their both at the GNRS.

The rear end rolled pan is a metal masterpiece.  I think he will like this car better than the Deuce.  Everyone has a Deuce hiboy roadster.

Here is a drawing made in 1998 which was my inspiration for Lucy.  If you look hard you can see the two are very similar in design with the top and steel wheels adding to the retro look.  Yes, there were roadsters built with hidden hinges in the 50’s just like the 80’s.  Boyd didn’t invent hidden hinges…McGee did.

Roy can still build a real traditional car with the 70 – 80’s resto rod look and stance.  I want this one.

Today’s Woody….Walt owns this very traditional styled car.

In these big cars you will never see the chassis has an IFS unless you lay down on the grass.  Most people who like these cars can’t bend over or lay down on the grass.  Bending over or laying down is something I know longer do at car shows.  I use to always crawl under a car to see the chassis and capture some ideas for my car.  This one is perfect.

    s Feature | Pewsplace is kinda boring. You could peek at Yahoo’s front page
    and see how they write post headlines to grab people
    interested. You might add a video or a related picture or two to get people interested about what you’ve
    written. In my opinion, it would bring your website a little bit more interesting.
