Friday’s Fat Fords

I am normally a very active person during the day. I believe that keeping your mind and body active adds to your desire to keep doing the things you have always done despite the aging of your body. My current dilemma prevents walking, but my mind is being put to use on my keyboard. Typing with legs elevated is not difficult but certainly puts a kink in your back. Oh well, a person has to make some sacrifices to “Keep the Flame Burning!”

Due to our rainy weather, our “Back Road Boys” trip was cancelled and will be rescheduled for another time. I hope to be back to normal soon and will schedule the next couple of trips during the spring. I am thinking of a save the date for our annual get-together with the Central Coast Roadsters at Alisal Ranch’s River Grill in Solvang. I am planning on July 11, 2017 for the get-together! I don’t have Steve to do some leg work but will keep you informed on Pewsplace.

Since High School I have loved the 46-48 Ford convertibles. I couldn’t find one that was in my (Dad’s) price range and in good driving condition, as convertibles were not popular in Decatur, IL. Most of the little books like Rod & Custom featured customs with Carson tops and body modifications which were possible if our town if we could locate a body. That never happened and I moved on until I retired when I finally purchased a beautifully restored 48 Convertible from my friend Gary Monnich. I drove the car home from Sonoma, CA with Jane following me. No problems with the flathead which would provide me transportation during my last couple of months of working. I have told this story before but I will close by saying the 46-48 Ford convertibles make great Hot Rods even in stock form. I can’t leave anything alone, so I choose the add a modern driveline and lower them down a little. That’s it, no more needed.

The Fat – Attack — as started by P&J and Fat Jack in the 80’s provided a new source of parts for the home builder and professional. The availability of bodies at a reasonable price combined with added comfort feature made them an instant hit with enthusiasts. The wheel has turned again with the Brookville bodies and the SO-CAL Traditionalist parts pushing many back to their first Love — The Iconic Deuce. Isn’t this fun?

Since my early High School days I have admired this convert.

This is the photo you see the most showing the Z’d rear frame, 49 Chevrolet license surround and thru – bumper exhaust.

From the HAMB this illustration is what the tail draggers of the era looked like.

I am a fan of the stock look on these wonderful old ragtops.

My two 48’s were my favorite Hot Rods over the years.

Changed the driveline, added a dropped axle and new wheels and tires.

The interior was left stock except the F-100 steering column and square weave carpet.

I am a fan of the 327/350 combination and they fit like a glove.

This example uses 46 parking lights and 47-8 side trim. The 46 was the prettiest and was mounted above the reveal.

The Moonstone Gray is a great color on the convertibles.

Just add a midget race car and you have your Saturday Night Special.

I like to buy them in this condition because it keeps me busy and I can see what I have.

Allen turned the hulk into this beautiful rag top.

He is braver than me and chopped the top 2″.

Allen likes Ford engines and they fit in the large engine compartment.

He main job is a top notch upholstery shop in Thousand Oaks, CA.

SAR built a couple of these special Fords and this one was my favorite.

Barry Lobeck sold this one to a friend of mine a few years ago.

Top up or down they look good to me.

LB interiors are inexpensive and look great with the stock appointments.

    the sectioned ’39 convert in the back ground, Do you have anymore pictures of the 39 ?
    I love ’46 Fords, (they are the ones for me)
