The weekend had a lot to offer car enthusiasts this Labor Day. The Ventura Nationals, Labor Day Cruise and Chuy’s just to name a few events that offered a good time and lots of cars. The weather was LA perfect and the attendance was up at all events. I am very happy to see the car people back in the groove again. Jane and I drove the Woody to Chuy’s along with Terry in his SD. The place was packed and the music was loud. Most of the cars were late model but a few of our gang showed up and we all had a great time. I actually took the weekend off and just enjoyed the holiday. I have some photos from the weekend for you to view.

I am looking forward to the football season, College and Pro games keep me entertained all winter. I am sorry for UCLA as they have a tough schedule this year. I hope the Oregon teams will show some slack to our poor teams. What about a 72 to 0 score! Oh well! The NFL season kicks off thursday night with last years bowl teams seeing if they do a repeat. Favre should be real careful or the 20 million won’t mean much to him if he gets hurt.

Stay Tooned!

Lynn

Chuy’s was packed to the walls. The parking area was very well organized and everything went smoothly. I would estimate over 200 cars showed up for the evening get together. Thanks, Chuy’s.

A very nice BRG 5 window was at Chuy’s. The color with a light camel interior really stood out. The owner has fabricated lots of custom parts on his slick Deuce. Note Kugel front suspension and polished components.

I have a thing for phaetons and this 33 caught my eye. The car was purchased as a stocker and converted to a hot rod. Steve at the Limeworks did a lot of work on the car. The red wires bring back memories.

A stock 32 dash was installed in place of the original one. Have you priced a 33/4 roadster dash lately? $$$

Here is a trick for you tall drivers or persons who have been over fed. You simply add a plate to move the seat rearward. The owner let me sit in the car and I fit with ease. My Deuce phaeton was stock and Wescott sent me a 3 inch set back front seat which solved my problem.

Geroge drove his 56 dual quad convertible for all of us to drool over. You need to spend some time looking at this beauty.

The Orange County Labor Day Cruise offered a very different type of Deuce roadster. The owner built his own Woody hiboy.

Dan Collins had an open house Sunday and showed off some of his metal work. This 40 is going to be a sled and have the Nick Matranga hardtop look. Note rear fender extensions and shaping.

This is Dan’s personal roadster. I love the early look of this hiboy. The retro look continues to be strong on the West coast.

Dan installed the 40 dash to give his car a personal touch. I like 40 dashes in just about everything including a 40 Ford.

Today’s Deuces…dreaming!

Frank has the cars and he and his brother spent the weekend taking photos of their two cars. Both cars are for sale and if anyone has any interest call Frank or Joe. The cars are advertised on other sites. Nice picture, Frank.

The end of the long summer is here and the heat came back today in LA. I did spend the morning at the “Office” catching up on what I missed during the week. Most people are going to the Ventura Nationals tomorrow, so I guess I will head that way myself. I have never been but I am going to see what the former Primer Nationals has to offer in traditional cars.

I spent some time in the garage working on Andre’s front axle wishbone removal. I swore the last time I did this job it would be the last but here I go again. I have a process to remove the spring perches and wishbone which consists of soaking in penetrating oil for a few days and then trying to remove the nuts with a wrench or impact wrench (which I don’t have). I then move to the hot wrench and try heating the nuts so they will turn off. I was successful on one side but the other side after three heatings still refuses to come off. I quit for the day as I was starting to use some pretty foul language and Andre didn’t like that. Tomorrow I will reheat and probably ruin the perch in the process. I reuse them and have extras from the many I have removed over the years. I hope to have everything ready to go to the blaster on Tuesday.

Labor Day has always marked the end of the summer and the start of the fall in my mind. While not the official dates they work for me. I was either going back to school, coming back from vacation or getting ready to go back to work. Now I just enjoy the long weekend (I can’t tell the difference anymore) and hope to have a good time someplace looking at cars.

I wish all of you a wonderful and safe Labor Day. Fire up the Barbie and open a cold one. Life doesn’t last forever…or does it?

Stay Tooned!

Lynn

Bob had loaned me some tires for the Woody so I tried them on the delivery. I like them but they are a little too big being 235×75R x15. I may try this size on a 7 inch rim and see if they fit. The wheelwell in the SD is only 10 inches wide metal to metal. The tire is 9.5 inches…too close for my taste.

Here are Andre’s doors ready to go on Tuesday. They need to be stripped to remove all the internal surface rust.

After heating the nut it still refuses to come off. I may borrow an impact wrench tomorrow from Bob O.

The passenger side came right off after heating once. The perch removel is another story for next week. These don’t budge after heating. #*#$#

I had a call from Sonny in Kansas who has a very nice 4 door available that he got from Lobeck. I started looking for the same on the net and came up with this one in Roy’s shop. When stripped down they have very little structure left to them. I think the front seat is tied into the B pillar. Clean body or what. This is Eric’s new 4 door Vicky.

I saw this one at this years LARS. Nice ride with lots of doors. He was with Mike and my favorite tudor Deuce hiboy.

If I would focus on the roadster I could have one that looks like this is a few months. Just a thought! I do sit in Lucy for extended periods dreaming of the coast hi-way on a moonlight drive with the wife. Note shortened gas tank cover.

While visiting Roy’s site I saw his standard Deuce chassis and still maintain it has solid engineering for going down the road. This is under a nice sedan he is building.

When I mentioned a moonlight cruise up the coast the wife said she prefers a forty coupe with a heater. This Lyon blue, Mercury wheeled beauty would fill the bill. Where do they find all the 40 coupes people are building? Bob has a factory about ready so you can order yours.

Today’s Coupe…dreaming!

Now this little 5 window at the HRR was one of my favorites. I have a lot of favorites don’t you think. Note dress code for the end of the strip parking.

I stopped by Bob’s to see if I could help him with the coil over shock for his Kugel front suspension. It seems that after chroming everything the lower collar (aluminum) galled on the steel shock. He called Jerry and he told him to bring it down and they would see if they could fix it. Kugel’s is an hour and half from our house in good times. I told him to try and clean up the threads on the aluminum collar with a wire brush on a Dremel. He did that and the problem was solved. He will buy coffee tomorrow and maybe a double doze of cookies. I had the same thing happen to me on Wildwood front brakes which have aluminum hubs and screw in grease caps.

I spent the rest of the day on the rear house doors and dreamed about what a nice engine compartment Walt has in his Woody. He had Jim do a lot of work on the engine compartment, dash, and add power steering to the straight axle (not dropped). Whenever I show someone the under the hood they are really impressed. Walt’s choice of Black rather than chrome was an excellent choice with the maroon car. I will copy this set up on one of my cars. Jim is to be complemented on his detail work on the Woody. It is not easy to redo a car when it is a nice as this car is and not make some scratches.

The weekend is full of events so I will decide if I will go to Orange County or the Ventura Nationals….

Stay Tooned!

Lynn

Walt has added A/C to the Woody by using a Vintage Air unit utilizing a black compressor and serpentine belt system. All of the components are powdercoated black with chrome/stainless accents. Note overflow tank is also black.

He recently added a mini starter to improve clearance near the exhaust. Note burnt battery cable from proximity to header.

Note neat hose routing for A/C and heater. The interior floorspace is unaltered and Ron made a cover over the fittings. Very tidy.

If you have ever driven one of these large wagons without power steering you will appreciate the ease of the p/s unit on the straight axle. One finger turning even sitting still. This will be a feature for Andre.

Unique engine mounts are urethane bushings installed in stand off bracket. This provides lots of clearance for components. The front crossmember is a Ventura Valley one that lowers the car about 3 inches using all stock components and bolts in place.

All the lines for the vacuum, fuel and carb are made from stainless and look fantastic. The manifold is an Edelbrock and also is powdercoated black.

Note the neat routing of the upper radiator hose to the center of the radiator. Mattson radiator has been powdercoated black.

If you ever wanted to return this car to stock nothing has been cut or modified on the chassis or firewall. Note how far the engine has been set forward in order to prevent transmission interference with the x member. You can install the large HEI and still have plenty of room. The HEI is bulletproof and provides good spark.

The deep maroon paint looks black at sunset. I also love the natural wood compared to the dark mahogany panels.

Today’s roadster…dreaming.

The morning started early with the wife wanting to get the rear doors repaired and painted before her sister comes. Now this is not what I had planned for today. I had planned on taking the doors to the stripper and stopping by Freds again. That did not happend and after a full day of working on house doors I am sitting down to write today’s blog at 7:30 pm. Somehow the doors challenged my skills in wood working (nill) to the point I went to the lumber yard for some pointers. They thought I should stick to building cars. I did a good job but the not the best of removing the rot and found that bondo works good on wood. Tomorrow I will finish and paint prior to hanging the door back on the frame.

I have a few new photos for you tonight and I have some people who called and actually are interested in the roadster so…

Stay Tooned!

Lynn…the door man.

Tim has his new coupe home for the final build. He has a system that really works for completing 40 coupes in record time. I can’t wait to see this one finished.

I am not sure what he is planning for the overall look but so far I like this one. Folkstone Gray is Bob’s new 50 gallon drum paint source.

I featured this 33 tudor a few weeks ago and Dave sent me some interior details that maybe you can use. This is a 42-48 Ford heater that has been converted to the A/C controls. He is using a Gen11 mini and it does the job on hot days. Nice touch.

The lower door reveals the Vintage Air controls when opened. Walt has his radio in one of these heater shells. Old heaters are being used more and more today.

The upper doors conceals the A/C vents when opened. Note wheel vents.

The driver is not forgotten. When you go down the road this fold down unit blows the chilly air on your hot body. I like it.

Banana Dick has all the money but still has a hard time getting into his Gull Wing. You should see this beauty. I don’t think I could afford the fitted luggage but I would sure like a ride someday.

Frantic and Chuck did a great job on this black plate CA convertible. I wish this one was in my garage.

Ed is enjoying my dream hiboy roadster built by SO-CAL a few years ago. The owner was kind enough to let me sit in the car as he is a big boy and fits in the car thanks to the SO-CAL seat design of Pete’s. This Lombard Blue beauty is the still the one to beat in my mind.

Today’s many door sedan…dreaming!

I mentioned 4 doors a few days ago and this one was built by Chuck and the Kennedy Boys. Note slight chop and stock looking colors.

Bob called early and asked me to meet him for coffee. He had to show me his fully sanded and ready for paint model A roadster. Today, I felt pretty good so I headed to Mickey D’s for the senior coffee (60cents) and 3 oatmeal cookies. Now this is a regular with Bob and I … folks the cookies are great. (3 for a buck) After coffee we stopped by his shop and looked at the body and all of the parts ready for paint. This process is being done by a pro shop worker after hours. The parts looked perfect and very straight. He is painting the car black so everything must be perfect. Bob has over 400 hours in prep and fitting work on the roadster. You can see why it cost six figures to build a car. The shop who is doing the work averages about $30K+ for a show paint job. I was running late and still needed to go to Frantic and see how his trip to Louisville was.

When I arrived, Fred was on the phone (always) and the shop was full of people. I had a pleasant surprise when in walked Dave, Fred’s long time employee who has been battling cancer over the past year. Dave is in his early twenties and has the cancer under control. Fred sure needs him back to work. Welcome back Dave. Fred’s delivery ran perfect to and from Louisville which is attributable to his years of experience building cars. It was now time for Toppers and I would be a little late getting there.

We had a good turnout at Toppers and Dave rolled in with his 40 rag going topless. The Streetscene boys announced they were closing the Simi Valley office and moving to Moreno Valley. I will sure miss them on Tuesdays and I don’t know what I will do about the football pool which is starting soon. Dean will figure it out. After lunch, I decided to go home and work on Andre. I managed to remove the last body bolt, the front axle and wishbone. I will take photos tomorrow. It seems archaic that I am splitting the wishbones on a 40 in this day and age. Fred thinks I am nuts.

It has been a good day for me so…

Stay Tooned!

Lynn

Frank has another Phaeton in his collection of Deuces. This car has a great SO-CAL history being owned by the late Vern Williams for many years. The car is a real piece of history and Vern left it just the way he purchased the car; 37 LaSalle trans, 303 Olds, Eddie Marinez interior and added NOS fenders and running boards. Frank was able to persuade Bob that he should own it. Frank has a way with getting cars.

You don’t often see a Phaeton with the top down but this one looks good and has the proper side mounts for the top irons.

Frank thinks you need two of every Deuce made just in case one is broke down when you need to run to LA from NM. He has owned this one a long time.

The second Phaeton has a maroon interior with an engine turned dash full of gauges. Frank likes to shift his cars.

Frank chopped his first 3 window after is was completely finished. I showed him mine that Steve Davis had just finished and he told his wife he should chop his car.

Frank needed an unchopped 3 window so he purchased this one earlier this year. Pete built the chassis on this one and it has a Corvette rear end. Frank is leaving it alone. Good choice, Frank!

I have a thing for 40/41 pickups, especially CMG ones with whitewall tires. This is a cutie pie.

I hope you know the gentleman standing in front of Steve’s flamed 40 sedan. Tom was a big hit in P-Town and I am sure he truly enjoyed himself.

I am not sure who took this picture but he is to be congratulated for grouping some of the most influential people in hot rodding together for a picture. (Bud Bryan, Stroker McGurk Tom, Tex Smith, Andy Brizio and Jack Chisenhall)

Today’s Roadster…dreaming!

Frank has a couple of roadsters in his collection. This is the “Mayflower” and you will need to ask Frank about why it is called the “Mayflower” which is a whole story in itself.

The big weekend is over and it seems all the people had a great time. I am sure sorry I missed it but maybe next year I can get back on track. I received several photos of the GG’s event and thanks to all who sent me their favorites. My viewers seem to like the same type of cars that I do so it makes it easy for me to select the cars to feature.

I spent the weekend working on the sedan delivery, Andre, and removed all the body mounting bolts. I will need to have a pizza and beer party to lift it off the chassis. Maybe I will serve beer after the task is completed.

The Labor Day Cruise and the Ventura Nationals are next so…

Stay Tooned!

Lynn

Everyone like this Deuce Vicky. A complete resto rod, as in the 70’s, is still a very popular look for some folks (me included). Upgrade the driveline and leave everything else the way Henry made it. Cool ride.

The Deuce Vicky has the spare tire carrier attached which is lost on most hot rods. I left mine on my 3 window but later removed it and installed a luggage rack. Cool guys did not have either on their hot rods.

While we are discussing Vicky’s how about a rare 33 that was in Steve’s booth. Steve had just finished installing torsion bar suspension on the outstanding example of the Ford Victoria.

Vicky’s have the distinctive rear bustle that made them a classic choice for many owners. I love the black wire wheels and the overall understated elegance of the car. Ted has a stable full of beautiful cars.

No show would be complete without a nice 32 three window coupe. The steelies and stance make these rides some of the best.

Not to be left out, Don drove his 32 hiboy for all of us to drool over. This car has the look and the proper components. I noticed he has added radial tires for the long haul. I suspect the wide whites are in the garage on the wall.

Ray from Bend always builds a great car whether it is a Deuce or a Forty. This little pickup was a big hit with 40 fans. He also likes the CMG color. His partner in crime, Orville, brought his 40 and it found a new home with the same owner who purchased his sedan. Now this would be a nice pair to have in the garage.

The new owners of the Roadster Shop have been turning out some really neat rides. Steve loved this Speed 33 with the track nose. Watch for a future feature in the Rodder’s Journal. Note drilled bones… the latest fad from the retro rods.

Brian has parted with his top notch 40 sedan and is now a Sedan Delivery owner. This little beauty was originally from SO-CAL and is stock with a Columbia and 12 volt starting and lighting system. I wonder if that will help him in those cold Reno winters.

Today’s Deuce…dreaming!

When the day is over and the prom queen wants a cool ride home I know she would always choose this bright red Ardun powered coupe of Bruce’s over my primered rat.

P-Town is going strong this morning and it looks like another record crowd for this super event. The venue is really quite nice and always attracts people from all over the country. This is the last big event before school starts and provides the whole family with something to do. My friends Gary and George are there enjoying the cars and people. I wish I could be with them but I was unable to go this year. I plan to hang around the house and catch up on some overdue chores. Andre needs some attention in order to keep him motivated for completion. The very hot weather makes working after lunch time very difficult. I am still working on removing the body bolts to separate the body and chassis. I hope to have this done by Monday.

Roger is making progress on his very nice pickup and sent along some photos of his progress. Forty pickups are really popular today and I have seen some super nice ones. Roger’s will be in that category for sure. All eary Ford pickups through 1956 are on my list of nice rides.

Have a wonderful weekend and take that hot rod for a drive.

Stay Tooned!

Lynn

Forty pickups look good done up in the early style. This baby blue one is outstanding with white tuck and roll interior and varnished oak bed wood.

Nice stance and note the use of sunken 39 tail lights. The rear bumper is close to a sedan delivery style with a flattened center.

Roger has a nice flathead mill and some neat chassis work on his pickup. This should make a good driver on the road.

Roger choose coil overs and a 4 bar for his rear suspension. It looks like a TCI set up. Those glass packs with the flatty brings back memories of my early rides.

I love 5 window hiboys and this one has the look with the chopped top, Kidney Bean wheels, baby hemi and primer.

Here is a photo of some excellent chassis fabrication showing spring hangers, shock mounts, pie cut frame which is often required on repo bodies and frames where there is a large gap between the gas tank and body. (Dave Lane photo)

Here is the front side of the chassis showing the neat panhard bracket and exhaust system fabrication. Nice work Dave.

Here is one method of measuring for the axles in your QC. I do it using math but always check using a ruler as shown.

John and I like Tubs and this black one has the look I like. I don’t know why we don’t see more of these being built. I don’t think a glass Wescott would be a bad choice. Gary has a beauty in his stable.

I don’ know if anyone makes a glass 34 tub but this 33 is the real deal and really has the stance. I have seen the repo steel one from down under at the LARS a few years ago.

Today’s Deuce…one of a kind!

Jim sent along a photo of a really rare one of a kind Deuce cabriolet. He was looking for the color and don’t think this is a stock Deuce color. The car was built in Germany. Nice ride!

Hot Rod Week is going on in Nor Cal and Steve is busy taking pictures. The weather is in the triple digits so A/C is mandatory if you are going on the tours. I don’t think Steve has A/C, he is old school you know, but I am sure he is going to do the tour no matter what the temperature is. Steve is a die hard hot rod guy and slugs his way through all the cars at the meet.

The weather in LA is also very hot and while not quite as hot as up north, it still is in the low triple digits. I have doing nothing today except write my blog and trying to keep cool. Work on the cars and house can wait for cooler times.

Stay Tooned!

Burt Munro’s Worlds Fatest Indian was at Pebble Beach in all of its glory. He still holds the record set in 1967 at 183 mph. You basically lay down in the machine and hold on tight.

Here is an early photo of the launch at B’ville.

Deuce 4 door sedan at Vern’s place. Keith is building this one for a customer. He does great work. Many door Deuces have become the rage lately. I like them as a hiboy.

Vern had some nice Deuces in his shop. I know this phaeton would be on the top of my list. Flathead powered and dropped in front make this a candidate for a hot rod phaeton.

Vern knows flatheads and always has several in the works. Steve has a full on flatty that Vern did for him a few years ago.

In case you are in the market for a nice well built flathead, you might want to fax Vern. He does not do phone calls.

This very classy 34 roadster with a Bob Top was parked at Verns for a quick tour of the shop. I hope he has air conditioning.

The next stop was Castelli’s place and Steve shot his sedan delivery that he has owned for years.

A side trip to Bob’s place in Clearlake revealed the truth about Clearlake being the 40 capital of California. I though Buellton was the capital. Bob always has several 40’s under construction at his “Old Hot Rods” garage.

The station wagon is coming right along and will be a great ride when finished. Bob does excellent paint and body work at his shop. This customer also has a SD going together at Bob’s.

The delivery is coming along real nice and should be on the road by Christmas. I think a delivery and a woody make a great pair in anyones collection.

Today’s ride…dreaming!

The 40 standard is completed and waiting for a ride to its new owner. Need a 40…call Bob.

The old weatherman said it was going to be hot and he was correct. Driving a roadster to Toppers today would require the 55+ sun screen lotion. It seems all of us are subject to some dermatology work in our old age and I have my appointment next week. The conversation today was about the Primer Nationals being held in Ventura on Sept, 4th & 5th. The show has a new name, Ventura Nationals but it is the same event as in the past. I will be headed to the Labor Day Cruise on that weekend and hope it is better than last years show.

The promotors of these weekend shows invest a lot of time and money to provide us a place to show our cars and have fun. I support most of them but the $35 — $50 fees add up over the summer months. I select about a dozen shows to attend and I am happy with that decision.

The subject today is the hot rod chassis fabrication business. I have always been intrigued by the many variations of the Deuce chassis being constructed for the hot rod. Some are doing the stock thing, others are making minor changes and finally the old staples of SO-CAL, Lobeck, P&J, Deuce Frame and Cornhusker continue to crank out several traditional style frames a month. The price of these chassis if you just purchase the perimeter frame are very reasonable and you are way ahead of the game to purchase rather than do it yourself. I just sold mine and if I were to build another chassis I would buy one done from one of the above sources. I would save money and time which is important in today’s economic climate.

Here are some nice pictures of chassis being sold today. The registration is going to be a problem down the road on these chassis so get yours done today.

Stay Tooned!

Lynn

Ionia builds some nifty chassis with precision bevels and unique designs. This unit accommodates a turbo 350 transmission which is my favorite transmission in hot rod. Note stock chassis adjacent to this frame. The k-member is completely fabricated by Ionia.

Here is another modern traditional styled chassis ready to make someone a nice hot rod.

The tubular chassis has always been my favorite when building a new frame from scratch. A simple design provides a great deal of strength while offering a pleasing design. I am not a fan of the rectangular tubing being used in many chassis today.

A quickchange is mandatory for the old hot rod racer look. Winters is the way to go and they are now priced very reasonable and provide great service if required.

IRS can build you a super styled Deuce chassis for about $8K which is in the ball park for similar chassis. The quality of the welds and design will make you a happy camper.

Bruce builds some one-off chassis’s in his shop in Texas. Take a close look at the inner boxing plate which is another Deuce frame made to fit inside the repo rails. The motor mounts are quite sturdy.

I am a Champ fan but they are a little large for the Deuce. Ron’s Rearends in LA can put one of these together for you if you have the pieces. Mine ran about $600 bucks for everything.

A jig helps but is not required if you take you time welding up the boxing plates and crossmembers. Note simple top of frame jig.

A pair of legs for the rear of a stock chassis makes a very nice old style center section. You can purchase these from the vendor.

A vintage Halibrand makes a nice rear end for a hot rod. These units are pricy and are usually worn out with a broken pinion housing.

Another simple jig for boxing the frame rails. You can make one of these at home for a few bucks worth of steel at IMS.

Today’s Deuce Sedan….FOR SALE

This little beauty is for sale in CO and would make you a great car. Just think a ride this will provide you with instant gratification for about $125K or less.
Think about it!

The weekend started off very early for Jane and I. We had to meet Walt and his wife and head to Santa Barbara for the Woody show. The weather was overcast but very nice for a trip in a Woody. After a short stop for breakfast, we headed up the coast to Santa Barbara. Upon arrival, we looked around for the entrance and finally Walt figured out we needed to go to the Ocean instead of the College entrance. All went well and we were soon parked on the beautiful grassy lawn overlooking the Pacific ocean. The fog was still present and made for a beautiful cool morning. The women set up camp and out came the morning newspaper for all to enjoy.

Walt and I looked over the cars and talked to a lot of old friends. I would estimate there was around a 100 Woodies in attendance plus some hot rods on the hill. The sun came out and you could not have asked for a more perfect day to relax and look at Woodies. My wife said this will be a very memorable wedding anniversary present and a special thanks goes to Walt and Lorraine who made the day a memorable occasion.

The show lasted until about 3:00 pm and then we headed home. Little did we know what to expect once we reached the freeway. The traffic was stopped and stayed that way for the next 2 1/2 hours. The Woody ran cool (190) and that was a blessing for a hot rod in traffic. The automatic transmission was nice in this traffic. I can’t imagine shifting a manual transmission every 100 feet or so.

We stopped at the new 5 Guys Burger joint for dinner and finally reached our home around 6:30 pm. I have some photos to share with you today of the trip.

Stay Tooned!

The SBCC grounds are lovely with a huge grassy lawn for the cars to park. You can still see the ocean and scenic Santa Barbara coastline from the top of the hill.

We had a great parking spot right by the lunch joint and the cake and ice cream final desert of the day. I could not eat another piece by the time we left the event. A nice touch by the SBWC. Thanks!

The ladies set up camp and started reading the paper while Walt and I looked over the cars. My wife enjoys her paper on the weekend. She made it through the cars by noon.

Walt drove his 47 woody originally built by Fat Jack and later modified by Jim who installed a IFS and rear leaf springs. The car sits very, very low a FJ trademark. British Racing Green is the color that was popular in the 80’s.

Sam had his super “was a tree” Woody along with his “tree house” parked so he could have an ocean view. This is a local car that I see all the time. He goes everywhere in his Woody.

Jim had his shoebox Woody all shined up and rumor has it he arrived by 6:00 AM. Jim is a true hot rod guy and has been a participant and vendor with his CCC products and most events nation wide. Nice guy too!

Woody folks tend to really relax and enjoy themselves at this events. Somehow my Costco chairs seemed a little out of place.

Mark and his wife drove over for a few days in Santa Barbara. This Simard built 37 looks stock but has a mild 283 sbc, 5 speed and a nine inch rear axle. The gaps are perfect and the hood and grille fit are second to none. This is one of my favorite woodies…understated and beautiful.

Steve and his wife sold their 39 at the Nationals and decided to take the Woody to California for a little vacation. Next week is P-Town so they should have a great time on Hot Rod Week in Nor Cal. Their 42 Woody is really a wonderful ride and they drive it the most.

Tailgating is a lot of fun at a Woody event. The grass umbrella’s add to the show a “Surfer Dude” atmosphere.

Today’s Photo…Real life…not dreaming!

Looking at the SB coastline makes you feel good and made my wife and I a perfect 45th Anniversary present.
